So, I decided that instead of posting one review that contains spoilers, I am going to list my spoiler-free thoughts and split this review. This is the spoiler-free review and I will do my best not to ruin the endgame for you all. The spoiler review will be up after Sunday.
Back in 2008, I had heard a very positive buzz about a little Marvel film called Iron Man. I had watched the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy and X-Men, so I was intrigued about Iron Man since I had barely heard about this Marvel character. All I knew about the film was that a struggling actor, Robert Downey. Jr, was getting a huge critical reception for his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man. I finally saw the film one night when my parents rented it from Hastings and that’s when I knew that there could be more good Marvel heroes adapted to film. During the years after seeing Iron Man for the first time, I had heard that The Avengers were being teased and other Marvel characters like Thor and Captain America finally got their debut. It was later in High School that I heard that they were releasing The Avengers in 2012 and I got psyched to see it, so I decided to watch the other films since I had not seen them in theaters at all. After I finally saw The Avengers, I was officially hooked into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oh, how I didn’t know about how extensive this film franchise would go and eventually cumulate into an epic finale, Avenger: Endgame, and boy did the anticipation pay off.
For the first time since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and Return of the Jedi, I have considered Avengers: Endgame to be one of my favorite finale films of all time. This film was a huge treat for me as I’ve been a fan since the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so many epic moments and a final hour that had me really excited at the theater. Avengers: Endgame completely lands the ending to 22 films with a lot of heart, drama, and epic filmmaking.
I will say that it is not a perfect film as I have a few nitpicks with the film, but it doesn’t subvert my overall opinion of this film of being fantastic, the first two hours is a slow burn and in some ways there could’ve been a few cuts in the beginning, if you haven’t been a fan of the MCU in general this film will not change your mind on it, this film was made for fans by fans, there are some very risky decisions made to some of the main characters and some of them will make people furious, I will also say that there are a few potential plot holes concerning a particular concept that I will not say in this review, but after listing these nitpicks I was mainly unaffected by them, but I did notice them.
Everyone in this film does a great job and the original six main actors had me emotional up with their acting. Robert Downey. Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Scarlett Johansson, they all deserve a standing ovation for working their butts off into developing these characters throughout the MCU, and there is one particular part of the end credits that made so happy that I got to watch these people grow into great superhero characters.
The best part of the film is the final hour, this is something that I have dreamed of since seeing the other MCU films and also when I heard the announcement for Infinity War when it was originally going to be split into two parts. I will dare not spoil it, but to many fans of the MCU, this is Marvel Studios’ finest hour in my overall opinion of the MCU in general. Endgame is what it says it is, THE endgame. It’s a great cumulative film that wraps up 22 stories and will satisfy most fans with it’s ending, see this film on opening weekend because I had a great crowd when I saw it. It’s a great conclusion and deserves any Marvel fan’s attention.
